Long Island Design Spotlight: Custom Home Speakeasy

A Manhasset Basement that Redefines Everyday Living

Some of the most memorable spaces in a home are the ones you don’t immediately see. In this Manhasset project, we transformed a lower-level basement into something entirely unexpected: a home speakeasy designed for movie nights, game days, and everything in between.

It’s layered, moody, and a little bit indulgent in the best way… but still completely grounded in real life. (View the full project here.)

Opening Scene: Setting the Mood

The design leans into a richer palette than you might expect from a family home, and that’s exactly what makes it work. We built the space around deep, saturated tones—think inky charcoals, dark woods, and layered textures that add depth without feeling heavy.

The color drenching throughout, paired with the Viola marble, gives the space a sophisticated edge that still feels playful and inviting.

The Main Act: A Space That Does It All

What makes this space so successful is how seamlessly it balances multiple functions without ever feeling divided.

First, the movie lounge sets the stage—anchored by plush, performance seating in a rich green fabric, comfortable enough for long movie nights yet tailored enough to hold its shape.

Just beyond, the space opens into a more relaxed game area, where a ping pong table is joined by wall games, darts, and pinball. It was designed as a true extension of the movie area, so when your favorite team is playing, you can still catch every moment while playing a match.

The bar was thoughtfully designed to showcase the clients’ favorite wines while functioning as a true workhorse—complete with generous counter space for mixing drinks, a mini fridge, and a hidden garbage cabinet—all while grounding the space and maintaining a seamless flow.

Behind the Scenes: Built for Real Life

Of course, behind the mood and the atmosphere is a layer of practicality that makes the space truly work. We leaned heavily into performance materials, fabrics that resist spills, finishes that can handle wear, and surfaces that are easy to maintain without sacrificing style.

Even the darker tones were selected carefully, so they feel forgiving rather than high-maintenance.

As always, the goal was simple: to create a space that looks elevated but lives easily. Because the reality is, this isn’t a “special occasion” room, it has become this family’s everyday room. The kind of room you can walk into with a glass of wine, a bowl of popcorn, or a group of kids and it all just works.

Final Scene: The Luxe Design Perspective

Projects like this are where we really lean into what we do best, which is creating homes that feel as good to live in as they do to look at. It’s never just about one room. It’s about how that room fits into the bigger picture of your home, your routines, and how your family is evolving.

When that’s done right, the result isn’t just a beautiful space it’s one that keeps working for you over time, without needing to be rethought and redone every few years.
