A vacation home should feel like an escape the moment you walk through the door while still being able to handle the realities of everyday life.
For this young family’s Northport retreat, that meant creating a home that felt bright, airy, and welcoming while still standing up to wet swimsuits, sandy feet, and the occasional Airbnb guest. The result was a relaxed space that reflects the charm of Northport while balancing durability, comfort, and timeless style.
Designing for Family Life—and Rental Life
One of the unique challenges of this project was creating a home that served two purposes. It needed to function as a personal getaway for a young family while also appealing to vacation renters.
That meant every design decision had to work a little harder. The home needed to feel warm and welcoming to a wide range of guests while still reflecting the family’s personality. We also looked for opportunities to maximize functionality, like incorporating bunk beds that allow the home to comfortably sleep more family and friends.
We used performance fabrics throughout the home so the family never has to worry about spills or how the home will hold up after a weekend of guests. Many of the fabrics are bleach-cleanable or machine washable, making them both practical and beautiful.
From the upholstered furniture to the area rugs and finishes, every selection was made to hold up to years of family vacations, entertaining, and everything in between.
Inspired by Northport’s Natural Beauty
The design palette was inspired by everything we love about Northport: the waterfront, lush greenery, and the slower pace of life.
Soft blues and layered greens create a calming backdrop throughout the home, while floral and bird-inspired patterns add personality and a sense of place. These details bring the outdoors in, creating a connection to the natural beauty that makes Northport such a beloved destination.
Rather than leaning into overt coastal themes, we focused on creating a refined interpretation of vacation living—one that feels relaxed yet sophisticated.
