Long Island Design Spotlight: From Kids’ Playroom to a Teen & Family Hangout

As families grow, their homes need to evolve with them.

One of the most common requests we hear as a Long Island interior designer is how to transition a kids’ playroom into a space that works for teens and the entire family—without feeling juvenile or overly grown-up.

This recent Luxe Design project on Long Island does exactly that. (Check out the full project here!)

What was once a traditional children’s playroom has been thoughtfully transformed into a teen-friendly, family hangout that balances durability, style, and flexibility—perfect for game nights, homework sessions, and hosting friends of all ages.

Designing a Playroom That Grows With Your Family

Playrooms often start out full of bright colors, toy storage, and pint-sized furniture. While perfect for early years, those spaces can quickly feel out of place as your kids grow older.

For this Long Island home, our goal was to create a space that felt:

  • Comfortable for teens
  • Inviting for adults
  • Durable enough for everyday life
  • Elevated without feeling formal

At Luxe Design, we approach these projects with a livable luxury mindset—designing spaces that feel polished and intentional, yet are built to handle real family use.

A Flexible Layout for Teens, Friends & Family

Function was key in this transformation. Instead of a room designed around toys, we reimagined the layout to support multiple uses:

  • Cozy bench seating and shelving for a reading nook feel
  • Open space for TikTok dance sessions
  • Large game table for adult mahjong nights

When designing a space for the whole family, it’s important to create a room where kids, teens, and adults all feel like it was designed just for them.

Durable Materials That Don’t Sacrifice Style

Teen spaces need to work hard. Between friends, snacks, and everyday wear, durability is non-negotiable—but that doesn’t mean the design has to feel basic.

For this project, we selected:

  • Performance fabrics that are easy to clean and resistant to wear
  • Hardworking finishes that can stand up to daily use
  • Textures and colors that add warmth and sophistication

The result is a room that feels elevated enough for adults, while still being relaxed and approachable for teens.

Why Teen & Family Hangout Spaces Matter

As kids get older, homes naturally become gathering places—for friends after school, movie nights, or weekends spent together. Having a dedicated space designed for that stage of life helps families stay connected while still giving teens a sense of independence.

This project is a perfect example of how intentional design can support changing lifestyles while maintaining a cohesive, high-end look throughout the home.

At Luxe Design, we specialize in Long Island interior design that balances beauty, function, and longevity. Whether it’s a kids’ room transformation, a teen hangout, or a whole-home renovation, our goal is always the same—to design homes that elevate everyday life.
